Jacob Blandy

In fourth grade a boy liked me, much to my horror, and everybody knew it. He was new to my school, having just moved from the east coast, but didn't really seem to have a problem making friends or being extremely obnoxious. How I somehow managed to strike his fancy I'll never know. I honestly have no recollection of ever interacting with him other than probably glaring at the back of his flat shiny head from the back of the classroom. Looking back, I probably exaggerated the situation in my mind, but it seemed as though this was the only thing anyone wanted to talk to me about.

"Did you hear Jacob Bandy likes you??" they would ask.
"Yeah."
"Do you like him too?"
"No."

One time after school an eighth grader even came up to me and asked if I had heard the news. It was not amusing. I tried my best to pretend the problem didn't exist and basically ignored it until it went away.

It's been years since I've even thought of his name, but today, inexplicably, it popped into my mind so I did the only thing a person in this situation can do, google his name. Well, as it turns out, google isn't a fan of him either and first suggested that perhaps I meant to search for Jacob Blandy, quite appropriately I thought.

A google image search revealed no such luck, unless he's undergone some major reconstructive surgery and/or aged at an incredible rate.

The Blandy results were suprisingly more intriging than the aforementioned Bandy, but were still not quite on the mark.

God only knows where he is now, but if you're reading this Jacob Bandy, I don't hate you, you're just not my type.

Visalia, Yeah.

Visalia. It's where I'm from. I think one's appreciation for their home town only really begins after they leave it. For a long time Visalia was my Mordor, but after an extended period of living away from it I'm willing to admit I really sort of miss it. This realization can be a scary thing, especially because of the strong likelihood that I might accidentally end up living in a place just like it for the rest of my life. Perhaps this is not a bad thing.

One of the ways I've been finding new music lately is buy searching the latest musicians to hit Visalia. And I just discovered an exciting one::: Chad Van Gaalen. Apparently he's one of those guys that we all hate who has been blessed with numerous skills. He nabbles in music as well as illustration and animation and apparently he makes instruments too. Luckily, he seems cool enough for me to suppress my jealously long enough to enjoy a few of his music videos before the self-deprecation begins.

The perfect birthday present.

A mini. me. ROBOT.

All you have to do is submit a photo and 2,000 dollars to the Japanese company Little Island and they will fashion your very own miniature.

And. it. TALKS.

An animal

I'm feeling very accomplished. Today I somehow managed to get things done. Lots of things. I'm not quite sure how it happened.

List of things:
- slept in
- feasted on a smattering of trader joe's food items
- finished the final lesson for my online class
- ate chocolate lover's delight
- watched rob and big
- took a nap
- worked for six hours on dreaded yearbook

And now I'm going to crochet.

I might even clip my toenails.

Amen.

A Spoonful of Sugar

There are many horrible things about colds: runny nose, stuffy head, soar throat, endless mucus, endless sneezing, fever.. you get the idea. There are likewise, many ways of treating these symptoms. Now, I mentioned earlier the method of ignoring your cold, which in the end is mostly fruitless, so I have sought new ways of coping. Perhaps they will benefit you.

Method 1: Buy lots of orange juice.

It tastes delicious and is good for you, but be prepared for frequent bathroom visits.

Method 2: Take lots of drugs

Now, this method is a tricky one. Over the counter medicines claim to provide relief, but usually it's hit or miss. Try to get the pills that taste like candy or the cough syrup with the highest alcohol content. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Method 3: Nasal Massage

Works like a charm, but provides only temporary relief. This method could be awkward if you don't know your masseuse very well. CAUTION: Do not press to firmly on the nasal passages!! Nasal trauma may produce swelling and soreness, coupled with slight disdain for your well-intentioned masseuse.

Orange Juice with Extra Pulp/Multitasking

There have been a lot of things going on as of late. Homework, tests, a nagging online class, getting ready for my show, Disneyland, yearbook, and the anticipation of future joblessness/ homelessness. As a person of the female persuasion it is generally accepted that I will probably be doing all of these things simultaneously, while painting my toe nails and gossiping about The Bachelor. While the latter may be true, my body doesn't function very well under these circumstances, in fact, it quite frequently attempts to shut itself down. Yes, that's right, my body has commenced DEATH MODE filling my head, nose, and throat with mucus as well as violent tornado sneeze-coughs. Such is life.

During my years as a child, my parents typically did not tolerate sick days. "It's all in your head," they'd say. "Just pretend it isn't happening." So there I would sit, blowing my snotty nose all over the classroom, to disgust of my fellow classmates who could no longer make out the teacher's lecture. All this in an attempt to ignore my sickness away. Well, no more, I say. Never again. I feel horrible and I'm going to revel in it.

a surprise

There are certain times in the day when the light is just right in my apartment. This usually happens sometime in the afternoon between 2 and 4 when the sunlight dances atop the duck infested pool and reflects onto the kitchen ceiling. Last week, however there was a new occurrence or at least one I had not noticed before. Behold the glories of the flour jar:

It's my time, it's my turn, it's my season.

This is the anthem that awakens me every Tuesday and Thursday morning at the start of my gospel aerobics class. It is one of the few things that makes it possible to bear another day of kicking and swirling and crunching.

There are certain things that make life worth living, things that I can count on to bring happiness. The most recent addition has come in the form of poultry. A lovely little duck couple has claimed the Tropicana pool as their own private resort in which to swim and sun bathe. I hope their holiday never ends. Welcome duck friends!
